I wasn't working in OKC at the time of the bombing but I was working downtown OKC when the memorial was being built. I would walk over to the sight and watch the bulldozers move our Oklahoma red dirt around. The area was large and the hole very deep.
I have been to the memorial since its completion but it was not the same as being there with the open ground. It is sacred ground, a place of reverence.
Geron Davis wrote Holy Ground for this reason but it is perfect for so many other reasons

Thank you for sharing this. We Okies share that touch-point ~ where were you on April 19th? I was in Lawton, pregnant with my 14yo daughter. My boss could not locate her sister who was a legal clerk in OKC. Her sister's first assignment each morning was to deliver papers to the federal building. That morning, she was one of the lucky ones, her assignment was delayed.
