I Curse The Poke Salad

Since I did my post on poke salad I have made it 3 times.  That is 2 too many.   Big daddy was working on the lock & dam last week which gave him a perfect view of the Arkansas River bank.  He spotted that pokeweed and brought home a big sack full.
I think pokeweed season is over.  Maybe not, I'll probably make it one more time. My son inherited his love of poke salad from his daddy.  What are you going to do, just embrace the redneck and go on.

Love,
Territory Mom

I love poke!! My granny always cooks it twice. pooring the water off each time. I introduced it to Roy. He's from Iowa and they don't have it. So it's a treat. Though I have made it years.
As a kid, my gramps would go up to the coal pits and pick a tote sack full in the spring. But after it got mid May and the poke got "leggy" he quit picking it. We were told straight up never eat the berries!! Bad Juju!!

So years later, my boss's wife told me about making pokeberry jam!! JAM!!! I told about it being poison. "Well no wonder I get headaches cooking it down!!!"
Can you imagine??? I guess she cooked the poison out becuz they were never actual go to the ER sick. But Still!!
Mulberries good. Poke berries bad.

And I read something somewhere that poke stunts your growth... no wonder I'm so short. 4 foot 11 inches.

Oh that thing about manure curing freckles... it doesn't work.

Ask my Aunt.
I'm not that dumb!

Awww, poor you! As I commented earlier, I am not fond of poke, but love the smell...it signals SPRING, like nothing else....but one time of signaling is sufficient. LOL

Glad your family is enjoying the goodness of the land....it's a lot of work.

I like your Farm Apron!!

Have a good day!

Oh at 1st I thought you were gonna say someone got sick or something-Glad it's not that.
My dad has talked about poke salad but,I've never had it -I know you have to be careful about making it -Maybe one of these days I'll get brave and try it.

HAHAHAHAHA!! Poke salad was never one of my favorites either. Then I did not marry redneck boys so I never had to cook it either. LOL Now I have a redneck boy, but he is not a "Greens" of any kind eater.

Love ya bunches!!!
