Happy Birthday to My Mom

Here she is with Miracol on her face during a slumber party.  Merle Norman was new back then.  That is a roll away bed to the right.  To me they were so comfortable.

My mom shares her birthday with her great grandma, Mary Florence Webb Friels and her brother's first grandchild.  My uncle shares his birthday with my mother's first grandchild.  I know, so cool!  This is also the anniversary of her great grandparents, Charlie Dunn and Maggie Brashear Dunn.

My Grandpa's Birthday

Today my grandpa (the preacher) Harold Jeff Baker would have been 94.  He was born on this day in 1918 in Loco, Oklahoma.  He called it "Loooooco".  His mother was a Friels and there were a lot of Friels in Loco.  Anyway, he died on April 20, 1998, which means my grandma has been in a very bad mood for 14 years now.

I was going to show you how he appeared on the 1940 census but Oklahoma is not available yet.

OSU Memorial Service

NOTE:  I put this post on my other blog Delayed But Not Denied when I meant to post it here. Sorry for the double post.

Just in case you haven't heard the OSU memorial service for the victims of last week's plane crash will be today at 1:00 pm in the Gallagher Iba Arena in Stillwater. I heard that Channel 6 and Channel 23 in Tulsa will have it on live tv. I'm sure other stations will also. You can also view the live stream online on Channel 6. Go here for more information.

The holidays can sometimes be a difficult time for people then to add the loss of a friend or family member can put someone over the edge. Please keep our OSU friends in your prayers this week.

P.S. I never attended OSU but I have friends who did and it holds a special place in my heart. My grandfather's first cousin, Vernon Friels, played for Henry Iba. Maybe one day my children will attend Oklahoma State.

We Called Him, Bake

Harold Jeff Baker

April 2, 1918 - April 20, 1998

This was my grandpa aka "the preacher".  He was the patriarch of our family.  We called him "Bake".  My nephew was due to be born in April, 1998.  As Bake lay in his hospital bed he said that he wanted to see my nephew.  My sister had already named him so Bake called him by his name.  My nephew didn't arrive until May, but  I think they did meet each other on their journeys home.

It's Papa Baker's Birthday

David Jefferson Baker

This is Papa Baker. He was born David Jefferson Baker on this day in 1893 in Montague County, Texas. He was the oldest child of Thomas Jefferson Baker and Melissa Ann Ramsey Baker. His grandparents were Moses Jefferson Baker and Amanda Melugin Baker and David Crockett Ramsey, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Lambert Ramsey.

He had an older half brother, James L. Baker from his father's first marriage. There may have been more children who died during an epidemic when the family lived in Missouri. After Thomas J. Baker's first wife and their children died he moved with his surviving son to Texas where he met Melissa Ann Ramsey. They married and had four sons and two daughters.

In 1908 when Papa Baker was 15 his father died. His mother remarried and had a daughter. At sometime Papa Baker moved to Oklahoma and the rest of the family followed. I'm not sure why or when they moved. On August 4, 1914, David J. Baker married Ida Leona Friels in Ringling, OK. They had three sons and three daughters.

Papa Baker also had a younger half brother when his mother married again in Oklahoma. Melissa died in 1925. The notes I have indicate that the photo at the right was taken the day of her funeral.

Papa Baker was sweet man and had a great sense of humor. One time when a tornado hit he and Ida's home in Ratliff City, OK it took the roof off their bedroom while they were sleeping. They just got up and went to bed in another bedroom.

Papa Baker was a farmer, rancher and oilfield contractor. He died on a Sunday morning on August 15, 1971 in the Healdton Hospital. His funeral was at the Assembly of God Church in Graham and the burial at Dixie Cemetery, Dixie, OK.

Mama & Papa Baker's House is No More

Hundreds of homes in Oklahoma were lost last night to a raging wild fire.

Mama & Papa Baker lived in Ratliff City, OK. Last night their old house burned down. My cousin was living in the house. Her family is okay but they lost everything. There was a line of house together and a big junk yard that was a play yard to us. My uncle lived in one house and cousins lived in another. All of these homes are gone now.

This is Papa Baker in the old kitchen. He had a sweet face.

A typical farm kitchen with a milk can on the counter,

a big jug of tea and jar for drinking the tea.

I like the old mirror on the wall.

When we would visit my grandparents in Velma we would go to see Mama & Papa Baker everyday. They are my great grandparents. Their home held so many memories.

Mama Baker was a big woman and she would sit in one of the dining chairs in the middle of the room and we would sit on the couch. She had one of those gold lamps that hung from the ceiling. The one with the statute of lady in the middle and oil would flow all around her. Mama Baker was always turning up her hearing aid. I can still hear her say, Maaarrie!

When my grandparents would leave us at her house my cousin, Cheryl would watch us. I can still see her cooking in kitchen. She is the best cook ever. You never tasted chocolate chip cookies like hers.

Happy Birthday Bake!!

This is the preacher, Harold Jeff Baker and today is his birthday. He would have been 91 years old.

He was the oldest child of David Jefferson Baker and Ida Leona Friels. He graduated from Loco High School in 1937.

He married my grandma, "Ma" and they had three children. As a young man he worked as a roughneck and got the nickname "Bake" in the oilfield.

God called him to be a preacher and he gave up a promising career with Halliburton to go into the ministry. He gave 50 years of his life to preaching the gospel.

Happy Birthday Ida

This is Ida Leona Friels Baker and today is her birthday. She was born in Leon, Indian Territory in 1894. Today she would have been 115 years old. Her parents were James Harral Friels and Mary Florence "Flo" Webb. She had a half brother, Jim Friels from Texas. She also had another brother John Friels and 3 sisters, Ethel, Rosa and Elvie. She was raised at Loco, OK. She married David Jefferson Baker and they had 6 children, Ratliff City was their home. She was my great grandmother and we'll called her Mama Baker. Happy Birthday Ida.
