Windshield Oklahoma - Custar Farms

Custar Farms
Hwy 56, Okemah, OK
918-623-2628

This is where I get my plants for my garden.  The kids and I went by there last Friday.  It was our second visit this season but not our last.  So far we have planted 3 kinds of potatoes, 3 kinds of onions, broccoli, lettuce and Japanese cabbage.  We're good for now until middle of April then we will get our tomato and pepper plants.
Custar Farms is owned by David and Debbie Custar, great people.  Go here for more information about their farm.  They are also members of Made In Oklahoma Coalition.

It was a little cloudy last Friday.

They also sell seeds, jellies and salsa.  If for whatever reason your crop doesn't come in they will have plenty of fresh vegetables for sale throughout the season, and

blackberries in July.

Pretty!

Rooster got on the old tractor.  I don't think this is allowed but we got away with it.

Redbird took some rocks for her collection.  She gets them everywhere.
Oh, we will also be getting some picklers a special cucumber for making pickles because Redbird thinks you can just grow pickles.
If your in the area please check out Custar Farms.  You will love them.
Have a great day.

Yesterday's Harvest

A few years ago when I first met one of my husband's aunts she sat down beside me with her photo album.  I thought, okay she is going to show me pictures of her grandkids.  I opened the album and we began the journey of her garden, from discing it, planting, watering, fertilizing, spraying, growing, harvest to canning and cooking.  I thought what kind of person takes pictures of their garden and documents everything.
 I know, ME.

Hope you are having a great harvest.

P.S.   That is a white eggplant in the middle called "Ghost".  Cool, huh?

Wind Blown Corn

Memorial Day brought a fierce rain. This photo was taken yesterday. You can see the corn is starting to make a comeback.

Here's a better picture.  Notice all the different heights of corn, a horse named, Fred is to blame.
This weekend we will till up part of the garden and I'll replant okra, squash and more corn.  I don't worry about it being too late in the season to plant.  I'm a late bloomer so why shouldn't my garden be.

Have a great day.

Soon My Burden Will Roll Away

My beautiful garden spot is almost ready to sow seeds.  Did I say, beautiful, yes despite the old school bus in my garden.  I know you think you know where I live now, but there are old school buses in yards all across Oklahoma.
This bus once belong to my brother-in-law when he was in the reserves.  It has a full kitchen, bathroom (well kind of a bathroom) and a makeshift sleep area.  I thought when I married my husband we would get rid of it.  I know, right.  Because it has memories, none of which I want to know about it is here to stay and I now use it for storage.  Can you see the old Huggies box in the window?  It gets moved every 5 years or so.  Since it is my the garden right now I thought I would paint sun flowers on it.  However, I was recently informed by husband that he is going to roll up the hill into the woods and we are going to use it as a hunting/fishing/camping cabin.  Great idea, out of sight, out of mind.  Well, no we will still be able to see it.  So, we will redo the interior for the campouts.  I'm thinking of painting it to look like an old cabin complete with curtains.  This is will take time, maybe a year.  I can not lie we are procrastinaters.
What do you think?  Any and all comments or suggestions will be very accepted.
Anyway, soon my burden will be rolled up the hill.
Have a great weekend.

Baby Bull

Can you believe the FedEx guy is afraid of our Baby Bull?
He really is harmless, just a sweet little guy.  We got him about three years ago and we called him "Steak" for a long time, but after I bottle fed him twice a day we started calling him "Baby".  So, we became so attached to Baby that we just got him a couple of girlfriends. Now look how happy he is:

I don't get that close to him.
Have a great day.

P.S.  I love Baby Bull but he is one reason my garden didn't make it this year.  I'm still distraught about it.  Its hard to get a 2,000 lb. bull out of the garden.

The Garden Has to be Planted

"When one has tasted watermelon he knows what the angels eat," - Mark Twain
For the next few days I will be planting our garden. Its going to be in the 80s for the next few days, then we will have some rain. Its the perfect time to plant.
For my husband I have to plant corn, squash, cucumbers, onions and tomatos. Well, its for all of us.
This is what I ordered for our garden, tomato hot peppers, sweet chocolate peppers (taste like coca-cola), sweet yellow peppers, strawberry spinach, green grape tomato, Cherokee purple tomato, black diamond yellow watermelon, blacktail mountain watermelon, petit gris de rennes cantalope and charentais (a Europeon melon), lettuce, lavender and Indian Blanket flowers.
I'm very ambitious this year. Oh, my favorite things to grow, gourds. Hope you have a great growing season. Love, Territory Mom

Let the Gardening Begin

I'm a mail order gardener. I started getting these catalogs right after Christmas.

We picked out our garden spot for this year which is actually last year's spot. I've already order 20 poplar trees due to unexpected need for a wind break. I got those along with blueberries from 4 Season Nurseries. You get a lot of extras based on the amount of the order.

Last year I ordered from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds after I saw an article in Mother Earth News. This place is located where my Baker ancestors come from in Missouri, the Ozarks, so it tweaked my interest. I'm so glad it did. I will order my gourd seeds, Cherokee tomatoes and sweet chocolate peppers from Baker Creek. They also have festivals throughout the year. The link is the rareseeds.com.

We will plant the usual Oklahoma crops, lettuce, squash, cucumbers and watermelons. This year we are going to order huckleberries and elderberries. According to the garden catalog if you have a cold put two elderberries in your tea it will be gone in eight hours. It might work. It reminds me of Dr. Daisy Moses's secret tonic, drink it and in 5 to 7 days your cold will be gone.

You have to careful when gardening by mail because plants are mailed to you based on your zone so be prepared to plant as soon as the UPS truck arrives.

Happy planting,

Territory Mom
