Project Runway & Oklahoma's Boomtowns

Did you see the finale of Project Runway? I thought it would end the way it did, well kind of. They really got on to Kenley for her knockoffs and she acted so innocent. She's funny. Anyway you can go to http://www.people.com/ to view her work and the others. They even have it so you vote if you think Kenley copied famous designers.
Anyway, what does this have to do with Oklahoma, you ask. Well, one of my grandmothers was a seamstress by trade. She was an expert sewer and designer. She lived in one of the boomtowns in Stephens County, OK. During the 1940's, 1950's & 60's she sewed for the wives of the local oil company executives. These ladies would go to Dallas to the big department stores and get dresses & suits on consignment. They would bring the items back to my grandmother and she would make an exact copy. At a fraction of the costs, of course.
Often my grandmother would go shopping, see an outfit in the window, go into the store, look it over and then go home and make it. More than once she was shooed out of the stores. She had a reputation. She wasn't in a competition like Project Runway but she made a pretty good living with her knockoffs.
Have a great day,
Territory Mom
