Early Fall Break

I'm taking an early Fall break.
There are some much needed things to do around here.  Our hard working daddy has decided to take off Friday and Monday.  We might possibly go the Tulsa State Fair.
I have 5 bussels of pears to put up.  I thought my canning season was over.
I'll be back on Tuesday, Oct. 5th with a new Okie Trivia Contest.
Also, I'm working on the story, "The Abduction of Maggie Brashear".
So, friends have a great weekend and enjoy this beautiful Oklahoma weather.
Check out TravelOK for events in your area.

Answers To Okie Trivia Contest #2

Due to techinical difficulties I couldn't get the answers posted yesterday, meaning my house needed to be cleaned.  So, here we are today with the answers to the 2nd Okie Trivia Contest.  Only two participated and only two are winners.  Both Jill of All Trades and Mom Mayhem answered 3 out of 5 correctly.  I'll accept "that guy on CSI Miami" for #5.
Answer to #1G.D. Spradlin, born in 1920 in Daylight Township, Garvin County, OK.  Daylight is an area near Brady, east of Elmore City, OK.  Information about his family is hard to find, one reason is that in all the Oklahoma census records his family name includes a "g" at the end.  Somewhere along the line he dropped the "g" from his name.
Before G.D. Spradlin was an actor he was a lawyer and independent oil producer, owner of Rogue Oil Company.  When he arrived in Hollywood in the 1960's he was already a millionaire.  Some of his most memorable roles are, a general in Apocalyse Now, The Godfather, Part II, and that mean coach in One on One.  He also played "Hal Henderson" in the 1970 movie, Monte Walsh.  Here is an interview he did with the McCain Brothers back in the day.  I love the McCains' puffy hair.

Answer to #2:  James Marsden, born in Stillwater in 1973.

How could you not know Prince Edward from Enchanted and that cute guy from 27 Dresses.  Oh, he can sing to:

Answer to #3: Will Sampson (1933-1987) born in Okmulgee, OK.

Now you know him.  Will Sampson was best known for his role as Chief Bromden in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.  He also played "Ten Bears" in The Outlaw Josey Wales and "Taylor" in Poltergeist II.  Sampson was a member of the The Muskogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma.  He wanted to be remember as a painter more than an actor.  His painting depicting the Ribbon Dane is located in the Creek Council House Museum in Oklmugee, OK.

Will Sampson Grave: Find A Grave

Sampson died in 1987 from complications from heart surgery.  He was only 53 years old.  He is buried in Hitchita, McIntosh County, OK.  For more information about Sampson's art go to Beyond Cuckoos Nest and Kvskvnv Association.

Answer to #4:  Christian Kane, born in Dallas, TX in 1974, moved to Norman, OK in the 8th grade and attended OU.

Oh, wasn't he so handsomely rugged or ruggedly handsome, as the young Hub in Secondhand Lions, love that movie.  We loved him in the miniseries Into The West.  Kane is currently playing Eliot Spencer in the tv show, Leverage, so great.  Kane is also a singer, his cousin is country singer Brandon Hart.  Go here for Kane's official website.  Also, checkout these sites:  Christian Kane Fan Blog and Bam's blog.  This guy is POP-PU-LAR.
and
Answer to #5:  Rex Linn or "that guy from,  CSI Miami", born in Spearman, TX in 1956.  His family moved to OKC in 1969 where his dad was a lawyer.  He attended Heritage Hall and Casady, where they wear a lot of plaid.  (I used to cut a Hefner's hair and that was her joke, I always give credit where credit is do). Linn also graduated from OSU.  I heard he bleeds orange.

Linn is another oil man turned actor.  Oh my gracious, Linn has so many TV and movie credits its just too many to list.  What a great actor.  I first noticed him in Cliffhanger, great movie with Sly Stallone. (You can call him Sly if you were alive when the first Rocky came out) (Was it 8, 9 or 10 eggs?), Yoy, Adrian!!!
Okay, okay, Linn has been great to our state with his cool doc on OETA.  He first caught the acting bug when he saw Jack Nicholson in what else, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".  I'm sure Will Sampson helped out too.  Also, Rex Linn was in "The Long Kiss Goodnight" which G.D. Spradlin was in and he played "Hal Henderson" in the 2003 remake of Monte Walsh, the same charachter G.D. Spradlin played, very cool.
So, this is it.  Thank you ladies for participating.  Your prizes will be awarded soon.  Actually, I haven't made them yet.  I think it will be pear vanilla butter.  Sounds yummy and very fall like.
Have a great day.

2 Events Today - Nuyaka Wine Fest & Seminole Nation Days

Nuyaka Bridge

Two events going on today I forgot to tell you about.
Nuyaka Creek Winery is having its 10th annual wine festival today.  This winery is one of the oldest wineries in Oklahoma, which really isn't that old.  Nuyaka is a small Indian village located between the Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge and Dripping Springs Lake.  This bridge is closed so you can only get to the winery from the Creek County side, here is the map.
The name "Nuyaka" comes from "New Yorker Town" a place in the Creek Nation in Alabama.  This is a very old and interesting part of Oklahoma worth the drive.

Also, going on this weekend is the Seminole Nation Days.  This event is held at Mekusukey Mission which is the original site of the 1900's boarding school.  It is located 2 miles south on Hwy 99 and 2 miles west on Hwy 59 of Seminole.  The group Los Lonely Boys and Indigenous are the featured entertainment.  Also, the incredibly talented Dana Tiger and Tiger Family will be showcasing their original art work, prints, and t-shirts.  Dana is the daughter of legendary artist, Jerome Tiger.  I'm planning to feature Dana on a future post.  The work she is doing to perserve her heritage is amazing.
Oh, also the Seminole Nation's current chief is former state senator, Enoch Kelly Haney.  I had a chance to shake his hand when he was running for governor.  He is a very gracious man and another incredible artist.

Have a great weekend.

Oklahoma To Me - 27th Verse

Oklahoma to me . . .
is listening to the birds sing in the early morning,
then
hearing gun shots,
 it's dove season.

I don't think there should be a dove season.
Have a great day.

4.  Which U.S. President was born in Oklahoma?
Yes, this was a trick question.  The answer is zero.  PraireMaid said Ike came close.  I checked it out Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Denison, TX on October 14, 1890.
My sister did wonder if Carl Albert had to fill in for a short time. I'm surprised he didn't considering what was going on when he was Speaker.  That would have been cool to have a president from Bugtussle, OK.

Yes, its Cushing, known as the "pipeline crossroads of the world".

6. What two films did Tom Cruise film in Oklahoma?

More about these wonderful ladies later.  Each one has a great story.

and finally,
8. Do you know the name of this building and where it is located?

This is the old Cochran Building in Hanna, OK

Hanna is in McIntosh County and it is where my husband's family lived for a time.  We were driving through it a few weeks ago after going to Lake Eufaula.  You can see the mountains in the background in the above photo. I think they are the Tiger Mountains. I thought this building was so interesting looking.  I found out from my in-laws that it was owned by the Cochran family.  The family lived in the 2nd floor and they had a dry goods store on the first floor.

Anyways, thanks everyone for playing, all 3 of you.  Since PrairieMaid answered first I decided to give her the jar of my homemade salsa, however, Mom Mayhem and Nadine were right after her so they get a jar of my homemade pepper jelly!!!
So, ladies email me your addresses and I'll get your prizes in the mail.
Have a great day.
